Anyone who’s been through a major re-brand has had to face the dilemma of disposing of old uniforms and off-brand merchandise.
So when UPL acquired Arysta LifeScience in Australia and emerged with a totally new brand, there was the usual excess company and promotional gear in perfectly good condition, but no longer usable.
Ian Cass, UPL Marketing and Business Development Manager, decided it was worth investing some time into finding a good home for them.
“We considered major charities working in third world countries, but soon discovered they generally don’t accept clothing donations, preferring to support local industries in those countries,” he said.
“So we reverted to our network and their contacts and finally found a home for the clothing in Vanuatu.”
With the help of Aaron Prendergast at Vanuatu Agricultural Supplies in Port Vila, the clothing was destined for the tiny Pacific island.
“We originally intended to hand the shirts, jackets and hats out to farmers at this year’s Agricultural Field day,” said Mr Prendergast, “but in the aftermath of cyclone Harold in the Santo region we thought the clothing would be better used by those most in need.”
All of the clothing was sent to the Santo area ( Santo/Malo/Aore islands) following cyclone Harold and was distributed through a local charity.
“Big Heart Island Vanuatu is a small local charity run by ex-pat volunteers and retirees where 100 percent of donated goods and money go to those on the ground here in Vanuatu,” said Mr Prendergast.
“It’s rewarding to know that with a little effort and some thinking outside the square, we’ve been able to give people in need a helping hand,” added Mr Cass.
“Thanks also goes to Kalgin Global Logistics who chipped in by shipping the clothing over to Vanuatu from Sydney at no charge.”
