FAZOR containing maleic hydrazide, has become an essential
foundation for the in-store sprout suppression programme – particularly for
long term storage of the processing crop. Growers and advisors have focused on
getting the product on to the crop in conditions as close to optimal as
possible to get it effectively translocated to the tubers.
Follow-up in-store sprout control products like ARGOS (orange oil) will start later and be more effective following a well-timed field application of FAZOR. The product is only applied once - so it is worth prioritising it over other sprays to get the best results.
Key points to follow are:-
- Saleable tubers are greater than 25mm across
- Haulm is still green and before senescence has started – likely to be 3-5 weeks before haulm destruction- and not stressed
- Keep water rates up (350-500L/ha) and tractor forward speed slow
- Do not tank-mix FAZOR with other products – apply before the blight product.
- Do not spray if temperatures exceed 26 C (wait until the evening) and ensure 24 hours drying time on the leaf.
- Slow drying helps uptake and movement eg: humid conditions
