Control of early-season weeds is key, especially since some growers in the Midwest were not able to perform timely herbicide applications in 2019. Excessive moisture and flooding prevented planting on many acres, and exposed fields to rapidly increasing weed pressures.
Burndown and weed control throughout the season are top priorities for growers in 2020, says Tom Mudd, UPL marketing manager for corn and soybeans.
In a recent episode of Brownfield’s Managing for Profit radio series, Mudd advised growers who found problem weeds in their fields, such as glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth, waterhemp, lambsquarters and ragweed, that they should be ready to apply a herbicide that provides excellent over-the-top control. INTERLINE® Herbicide from UPL has a unique mode of action that inhibits glutamine production in the weeds which leads to a breakdown in photosynthesis — effectively stopping weeds in their tracks.
INTERLINE pairs well with residual products to create a complete weed management protocol. It can first be used as a burndown herbicide and then as an in-season over-the-top solution to manage weed pressures before weed seeds are produced.
“Control throughout the season is critical to stop any escapes that produce seed that will carry over into next year,” Mudd says. “We need to start early with residual products with multiple modes of action and then plan on following up with a post-emergence application to clean up any escapes.”
Growers have a lot of seed varieties available to them that are resistant to glufosinate, which is an effective alternative to glyphosate to control resistant weeds. After a recent label update to include all glufosinate-resistant crops, INTERLINE can now also be used on Enlist E3 soybeans and LibertyLink-GT27 soybeans.
“As the industry continues to evolve, UPL continues to provide unique product solutions for all U.S. growers. Through this expansion of the label registration, INTERLINE Herbicide can be used on a broader percentage of U.S. row crop acres for the convenience of growers,” Mudd adds.
The new label will give growers an additional herbicide option in these cropping systems and help retailers supply additional solutions for their grower-customers.
In past cropping seasons, it might have proved difficult for growers to get a supply of glufosinate for over-the-top use. But with UPL’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and India and a well-integrated supply chain, growers will be able to acquire the volume of INTERLINE to meet their needs.
