- Leading bactericide granted emergency exemption for the sixth year in a row.
- Almonds are most susceptible tree nut to bacterial blast and cold, wet conditions just before or during bloom make disease more likely to occur.
CARY, NC, USA (February 07, 2025) – UPL Corp (“UPL”), a provider of comprehensive and sustainable agricultural solutions, announces the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) have granted Section 18 emergency exemption approval for application of KASUMIN® 2L bactericide in almonds to prevent bacterial blast in California. The exemption provides almond growers with a critical preventative tool against a disease that can cause significant crop loss and for which there is no treatment once infection occurs.
A Section 18 exemption granted by the EPA lifts certain regulatory provisions on specific agricultural inputs in response to emergencies. The KASUMIN 2L approval applies to treatment on a maximum of 107,143 acres of almond trees in the state of California and is limited to the counties of Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, Fresno, Glenn, Madera, Merced, Placer, San Joaquin, Solano, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Yolo and Yuba. Exemptions will be valid from February 1, 2025, to April 15, 2025. The registration label and approved application methods can be found here.
“Going into bloom, and especially if the forecast calls for cold and wet weather, KASUMIN 2L bactericide should be applied to almonds as a highly effective tool against the threat of bacterial blast,” said Pankaj Pathak, Ph.D., Portfolio Marketing Manager, NPP for UPL Corp. “It uses a unique and targeted mode of action to protect tree health, help ensure crop quality and yields, and ultimately support growers’ livelihoods.”
KASUMIN® bactericide works by creating a protective layer over plants and preventing infection. Its active ingredient is also absorbed by the plant to provide broader preventative control of targeted pathogens. It is already used in California walnut production for the control of walnut blight after receiving federal and state registrations in 2019.
